Choices in the New Year

Did you know 70-80% of all chronic diseases are due to lifestyle choices? I have always wondered why this high percentage does not encourage people to make better choices in order to reduce the risk of these destructive diseases. From the beginning of time, God gave man the freedom of choice – we can choose to serve and love Him or not. If we live a life outside of God’s will, we live a life of despair with no purpose. This truth can be applied to our health as well. God has a perfect way for us to live and it’s a life full of joy and health. However, we must allow Him to change our hearts and minds about how we live.

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:1-2, NIV).

You see, we are called to be different from the rest of the world. God has given all of us a role to fulfill. We each have talents and gifts to use to glorify our Lord and Savior. Our health plays an important part in our ability to complete our purpose! “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light” (1 Peter 2:9, NIV).

Instead of focusing on getting into a smaller pants size or focusing on a high school reunion later this year, why not focus on living a healthier life to honor your Father in Heaven? When we seek God first and His righteousness, everything else will fall in place, including our health. “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33, NIV).

You have a choice to make this year. Choose to live a healthier life for Christ! Ask the Lord to give you wisdom and passion to seek out His truth and healthy ways of living. When Jesus Christ is the center of your life, your attitude changes, thus changing your behavior.
