18 years ago I could not find a church that would except my son or us as a family, because I have a child with special needs. At the age of 3 he cried out at the wrong time..he was in a wheel chair with a breathing machine, it kind of freaked people out. If I looked to put him in the nursery or a Sunday school class people did not know what to do with him or how to handle (it). I could not find a church in this area that would except us to come and worship. I wanted to attend THIS CHURCH, so I found a Special Buddy that would go into his typical age Sunday school blass with him and help him bbe included with the other children. Now mind you it was not that simple, but 17 years later, he is in the youth group and senior high class at church. We now have a Sports Program/Adpative Basketball group, Vaction Bible school,Adaptive Movie afternoon,Respite Care,Holiday Dances,Family Fun Fest besides our one on one Buddy Sunday school and an Adult Bible study. Lets just say VanDyke church has been so supportive to children/adults and their families that have a love one with Special Needs in our community. When I am ask to speak at conferences they ask me to speak on Building Bridges of Fatih for the Special Needs Families. Although I do a lot of community programs my passion is getting the families into a church so the child learns of Jesus love for them and for the parents/caregiver to be able to go to church and worship.
